Groentenmarkt, the vegetable market, sits beside the Great Butcher's Hall and has fed this city for centuries. Look across the square and you'll spot the Mammelokker relief on the old prison: a Roman father condemned to starve, saved by his own daughter feeding him from her breast. Medieval Ghent liked its civic art with a moral, and sometimes the moral was very close to the bone.
