A courtyard with 14th-century bones

Achtersikkel is a hidden square where 14th-century stone buildings lean into each other around a quiet courtyard. It was once part of the old St Bavo's church lands, a nest of houses, stables and little workshops that ordinary life passed through. Today it's a peaceful pocket that most people never find, even though it's a short walk from the busiest streets. That's the trick of Ghent: always another courtyard.
