The crossbowmen's clubhouse

Sint-Jorishof began life as the court of the Crossbow Society of Saint George — yes, the medieval city had a club for men who shot crossbows, and their clubhouse was this handsome. Later it became Ghent's oldest inn, then a place to eat, and it still serves that role today. Armed guilds, good food and a very old building: a very Ghent combination. The facade remembers when marksmanship was a civic duty and a social life.
