The relief with the awkward legend

The Mammelokker is a 1741 Louis XV relief by David 't Kindt, and it depicts one of history's stranger legends: Cimon, condemned to starve in prison, kept alive by his daughter Pero breastfeeding him. It's a story about duty and family told in stone, and it has decorated this corner since the 18th century. Look closely — it's more tender than scandalous. Ghent has always been happy to put a strange tale right on the street.
