The bridge with a grim job

This innocuous-looking bridge had a darker purpose: it was a former public execution site, where the condemned were beheaded. The most recent recorded execution here was in 1585. Today it carries trams and people who have no idea what the name means. It's one of those places where Ghent's pretty surface hides something you'd rather not dwell on — and the name is the city's way of remembering anyway.
