Flax market, now a nightlife corner
Vlasmarkt — the flax market — was where linen's raw material changed hands, one of the trades that made this region wealthy. Today the square is better known for the opposite of quiet evenings: its bars are a favourite of students and anyone who thinks midnight is early. Same square, different kind of transaction. Ghent has a talent for recycling its old working spaces into new social ones.
