The Peperbus watchtower
The Peperbus — the pepper pot — is a small round watchtower and one of the last visible remnants of Ghent's medieval city walls. From up here a guard could spot anyone approaching and raise the alarm before trouble reached the gates. The name comes from its shape. Cities used to be defined by their walls; now only a few lonely pieces are left, and this one has somehow ended up in a residential corner, quietly guarding nothing.
