From barracks to neighbourhood

The Leopoldskazerne was built between 1890 and 1905 as a military barracks in an eclectic style, and it has lived several lives since — including a hospital during the Second World War and a home for the Royal Medical Service school until 2007. Now the soldiers are gone and the site is being reimagined as a mixed neighbourhood with homes, offices and public space. Architecture rarely stays one thing for long. This complex is mid-transformation, and you can still read its past in the walls.
