The Pand, a monastery turned university
Het Pand is a former Dominican monastery, a beautiful jumble of medieval buildings that now belongs to Ghent University. Monks prayed here, then the city took it over, then scholars moved in. The name means 'the property', which is wonderfully blunt. As you pass, notice how many centuries of Ghent are stacked inside one courtyard: cloisters, refectories and lecture rooms all sharing walls.
