The abbey the emperor razed

St Bavo's Abbey began in the 7th century as a religious community founded by Saint Amand, and grew into one of the richest in the region — a place of illuminated manuscripts and quiet power. Then came 1540. Charles V, born in this very city, tore it down to punish Ghent for a rebellion. The emperor made his point in stone. What you see now is the echo: ruins, foundations and an outline where a whole world of learning once stood.
