The Rabot, a gate that closed for the night

Wander story · Rabot · 29s

The Rabot was one of Ghent's city gates, a fortified pinch point with two heavy towers and a gate that shut at night. Stragglers had to run. Whatever was inside after curfew was protected; whatever was outside waited until morning. Most of the walls are long gone, but the Rabot still stands, marking a boundary that once meant safety, tax revenue and the end of the world at sunset.
