The palace of the workers

De Vooruit is a people's house, built between 1911 and 1914 for the cooperative movement — a grand building where workers could eat, meet, read and organise. Think of it as a palace funded by shared groceries. The architecture is confident and a little theatrical, designed to say: this belongs to you. Today it's a cultural centre, and it's still making good on that promise.
