The canal that made a neighbourhood

The Coupure is a canal cut between 1751 and 1753 to link the Leie with the Brugse Vaart — an act of engineering that reshaped this part of the city. Canals were the highways of their day, and this one brought trade, traffic and a new street life with it. The quays that grew along the Coupure turned into a neighbourhood of their own. Water, in Ghent, is never just scenery; it's infrastructure with a view.
