A park built on an old fortress
Citadelpark was laid out in 1875 on the site of a former Dutch citadel — a fortress that once pointed its cannons at the city it was meant to control. Converting a military stronghold into a public garden is a very satisfying kind of revenge. Today it's lawns, paths and museums, with the odd relic of the old earthworks still visible. Ghent turned a threat into a picnic.
